Cold Laser Therapy
Benefits of Low Level (or Cold) Laser Therapy (LLLT)
What role can Low Level Laser Therapy play in treating inflammation and pain?
Inflammation and pain affects many people. In fact, one in five Australians live with chronic pain. Pain is estimated to cost the Australian economy $34 billion each year.
Cold laser (or “Low Level Laser”) therapy is not a new science. It was pioneered in the 1960s, and over the past five decades there have been thousands of published studies documenting its effects in a range of medical and veterinary applications, most commonly on inflammation and pain. It is widely used by health practitioners and sports people to complement other therapies and treatments, including physiotherapy, acupuncture, chiropractic and massage therapy.
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) uses low intensity lasers and light emitting diodes (LEDs) at the infrared and visible red wavelengths to relieve pain and reduce inflammation caused by damaged tissue. The low level laser light particles, known as photons, penetrate into the tissue through the skin to a specific depth depending on the wavelength. The low-intensity laser light does not produce heat. It works at the cellular level by assisting the body's own natural healing process.
Low Level Laser Therapy can assist to:
- relieve muscle and joint pain
- speed healing
- reduce swelling
- promote relaxation of muscle to alleviate spasms
- relieve stiffness
- improve mobility and functionality
Benefits of Laser Therapy in treating pain
- non-invasive, non-surgical treatment
- fast-acting
- complementary to other treatments such as physiotherapy, chiropractic and acupuncture
- use at home in between clinical visits
- applied directly to the site of pain or wound
